Open College Network West Midlands Canine Care and Welfare Level 3 Cost €250
The Open College Network West Midlands Level 3 Award in Canine Care and Welfare is part of the Canine Studies certificate has been developed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to pursue a career working in the canine care and welfare sector. It can be studied as a stand alone Award or as part of the canine Studies certificate.
This qualification can be used flexibly to meet learner needs. Depending on the context of the learning and the needs of each individual learner, the qualification can:
Prepare individuals to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level or requiring more specific knowledge, skills and understanding;

1. Understand the responsibilities of dog ownership.
1.1. Explain the commitment of owning a dog.
1.2. Evaluate sources and options when choosing a dog.
1.3. Summarise the legal responsibilities of owning a dog.
2. Understand care and welfare requirements of dogs throughout life.
2.1. Explain the development stages of puppies.
2.2. Evaluate socialisation programmes for puppies.
2.3. Explain the care needs of a dog throughout life.
3. Know how to prevent problem behaviours in dogs.
3.1. Analyse the causes of behaviour problems in dogs.
3.2. Develop a schedule designed to meet a dog’s needs and prevent behaviour problems.
4. Understand the healthcare requirements of dogs.
4.1. Summarise the signs of good and bad health in dogs.
4.2. Explain routine health care requirement of dogs.
4.3. Explain first aid techniques relating to dogs

Entry requirements: This course is suitable for those working in, or wishing to work in the Canine industry or pet owners that would like to increase their knowledge about dogs. A knowledge of working with dogs is not required. Minimum age 18 years
