The Open College Network West Midlands Level 3 Award inDog grroming is part of the Canine Studies certificate has been developed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to pursue a career working in the canine care and welfare sector. It can be studied as a stand alone Award or as part of the canine Studies certificate.

Prepare individuals to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level or requiring more specific knowledge, skills and understanding;
Course Content:
1. Be able to correctly handle and restrain a range of dogs with different temperaments.
1.1. Explain the importance to the dog and handler of following health and safety procedures throughout the grooming process.
1.2. Evaluate a dog’s character and behaviour and revise handling if necessary.
1.3. Demonstrate effective handling and restraining techniques whilst carrying out a range of tasks and using a variety of equipment. 2. Be able to groom different breeds of dog.
2.1. Evaluate a dog’s coat type and condition in order to select appropriate grooming equipment. 2.2. Demonstrate correct is of grooming equipment. 2.3. Groom eight breeds of dog
3. Be able to safely and effectively bath and dry a range of dogs.
3.1. Demonstrate correct handling techniques and use of equipment in bathing a range of dogs.
3.2. Perform bathing techniques using appropriate shampoo for the dog’s coat type.
3.3. Perform appropriate drying techniques for dog’s coat type.
4. Be able to clip and style different breeds of dog.
4.1. Explain styling requirements for a range dog breeds.
4.2. Explain styling requirements for specific circumstances.
4.3. Demonstrate safe use of clipping equipment.
4.4. Perform clipping and styling techniques for a range of dog breeds.

Entry requirements: This course is suitable for those working in, or wishing to work in the Canine industry or pet owners that would like to increase their knowledge about dogs. A knowledge of working with dogs is not required. Minimum age 18 years
This course is a combination of written assignments and practical lessons in Virginia Cavan. Students will receive 20 days practical tuition in a salon environment.
